Communal Shamba / Mkulima Kwanza Co-op
Founded by Keremba Warioba, Communal Shamba is a coffee company focused on facilitating the green coffee trade in Tanzania’s Southern Highlands. In tandem with their conception, Communal Shamba partnered with local small-holder farmers to establish the Mkulima Kwanza Cooperative.
The cooperative is not only a fully registered Agricultural Marketing Co-Operative Society (AMCOS), but was the first co-op in Southern Tanzania to specialize in producing
non-washed Arabica coffee. Mkulima Kwanza emphasizes experimental approaches to production in order to reduce cost, increase cup quality, and of course garner higher premiums for farmers.
Both Shamba and Kwanza are proud to use coffee as an agent for long term positive change, beyond well earned higher prices. In collaboration with the community in which
they reside, they have targeted local health and education as priority areas for intervention. Among other things, infrastructural improvements to maternal health
facilities, and the local primary school are wonderful accomplishments, and important humanitarian efforts of these companies.
